PhD scholarship @ DTU, Denmark in development of functionally graded materials for thermoelectric devices

Description: The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø DTU is seeking a Ph.D. student to develop graded thermoelectric materials with optimized properties over a broad temperature range for use in conversion of heat into electricity.This will take place at the international front line in collaboration between Risø DTU and four leading laboratories in Denmark, Japan and the US, while industry participation ensures strong links to both technology providers and end-users.A major challenge in thermoelectric materials development is to combine a number of materials belonging to different families of materials together in order to improve the conversion efficiency and to expand the working temperature range of the thermoelectric device. The project is focussed on the construction and optimization of p- and n-type segments over a broad temperature range by graded materials. This will be done in order to improve the so-called compatibility factor between the materials in each leg. The materials are chosen among the best of state-of-the-art materials and the novel developed thermoelectric oxides.
Requirements: Candidates should have -Master’s degree in chemistry, physics, materials science or similar

• Knowledge in synthesis of inorganic materials preferably oxides
• Prior knowledge in the area of thermoelectricity is beneficial
• Experience with experimental methods for materials characterization
• Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group
• Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Post doctoral position@ University of Copenhagen in miRNA biology

Description: The University of Copenhagen, is recruiting a post doctoral researcher for a 2-year project to work on mechanisms of microRNA (miRNA) action in the newly established research group of Peter Brodersen. The group uses the plant Arabidopsis thaliana to study mechanisms employed by miRNAs to regulate gene expression. The successful candidate will investigate the association of the silencing machinery with membrane compartments using primarily biochemical and genetic approaches. A major goal of the project is to identify and characterize novel factors required for membrane recruitment of the silencing machinery.We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a Ph.D. degree in molecular biology or equivalent. Experience with protein purification in addition to standard molecular biological skills will be considered an advantage, but is not a formal requirement. The applicant must be fluent in written as well as spoken English. The position is open to all applicants regardless of nationality, and will be funded by a grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

The successful applicant has (a) documented expertise in visualization, visual analytics, information visualization, or a similar field, and (b) documented expertise in user-centred design and evaluation, or similar activities. Previous experience with large displays, for instance interaction techniques for large displays, is an advantage, but not required.

PhD Scholarship@ Denmark Technical University, Denmark in Rational Evolution of Enzymes

Description: This new, international research project involves the study of the copper-containing enzymes known as laccases: Why did they evolve to their particular current structures, and how are these structures evolutionary optimized for stability and function under extreme environmental conditions, in particular high temperature?

The research area of computational protein evolution is of growing importance, because of the need to process increasingly complex information in the search for new industrial enzymes, both within academic research and within the private sector.

Requirements: Candidates must have-* a master’s degree in engineering or science or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree. Both theoretical and experimental skills need to be proven. Relevant theoretical skills: Computational biology/chemistry, mathematical modeling, biophysics, quantum chemistry, computers/programming. Relevant experimental skills: General Lab experience, protein chemistry, protein expression, mutagenesis, and/or screening.

Description: The successful PhD candidate will be working under two SEAT Work Packages that examine: (1) the social and economic dynamics of value chains for selected aquaculture products; and (2) the role of standards and certifications in governing such value chains. The overall objectives of this work are:

· Examine the configuration of global value chains for aquatic products originating in two Asian countries, their governance structures and upgrading possibilities, and the role of standards in shaping governance and upgrading; assess the entry barriers, structure of rewards and demands on quality and logistics that arise for actors at different levels.

· Compare different institutional arrangements to link small and medium producers
to these value chains and evaluate how national and international policy and regulatory frameworks for fisheries and trade facilitate or hinder integration in value chains for aquatic products.

· Analyse the costs and benefits, and inclusion and exclusion thresholds, for particular groups of producers (i.e. small and medium producers), countries or regions for production and marketing of cultured seafood.
