PhD Student Position@ Umeå University, Sweden in Theoretical Chemistry

Description: The department offers degrees at B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels, and our graduate- and postgraduate students are attractive for employment in academic institutions and industry.. This project is a further development of the energy migration theory which we developed about 10 years ago and is currently used to determine intra-molecular distances in proteins and bio- macromolecular systems.The PhD project is oriented towards the new description of the energy transfer process. The approach is also combined with time-resolved fluorescence experiments.
The project comprises:
- a fundamental knowledge in quantum mechanics
- the development of existing Fortran programs which are used in solving the stochastic Liouville equation in the frequency domain.
- the testing of a new theoretical description against experimental data.

PhD Scholarship@ Denmark Technical University, Denmark in Rational Evolution of Enzymes

Description: This new, international research project involves the study of the copper-containing enzymes known as laccases: Why did they evolve to their particular current structures, and how are these structures evolutionary optimized for stability and function under extreme environmental conditions, in particular high temperature?
The research area of computational protein evolution is of growing importance, because of the need to process increasingly complex information in the search for new industrial enzymes, both within academic research and within the private sector.
Requirements: Candidates must have-* a master’s degree in engineering or science or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree. Both theoretical and experimental skills need to be proven. Relevant theoretical skills: Computational biology/chemistry, mathematical modeling, biophysics, quantum chemistry, computers/programming. Relevant experimental skills: General Lab experience, protein chemistry, protein expression, mutagenesis, and/or screening.

Postdoctoral Fellowships @ TWAS- Subject: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics


Description:.Under this scheme, grants are awarded to individual researchers and research units in 80 science-and-technology-lagging countries (S&TLC) to enable them to purchase the research facilities they need to enhance their productivity.
The programme aims to:
* Reinforce and promote scientific research in basic sciences in developing countries;
* Strengthen developing countries’ endogenous capacity in science;
* Reduce the exodus of scientific talents from the South;
* Build and sustain units of scientific excellence in S&TLC over a longer period to help them achieve a critical mass of highly qualified and innovative scientists capable of addressing real-life problems facing their countries.
The TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences complements that of the International Foundation for Science (IFS). The two organizations maintain close contact to ensure the complementarity of the two schemes and to avoid duplication.
Please note that the TWAS Research Grants Programme supports research in the basic sciences. Proposals focusing on more applied research should be submitted to IFS. Thus, projects submitted to TWAS that relate to applications in agriculture or medicine or that use existing techniques to screen, for example, medicinal plants for bioactive substances or to monitor an environment for pollutants will be rejected.
Eligibility Individual applicants must be nationals of developing countries. They must hold a PhD, be at the beginning of their careers, but already have some research experience. They must hold a position at a university or research institution in one of the 80 S&TLCs. As a general rule, the grants are awarded to competent scientists under the age of 45 years.
Applying research units must be led by a renowned researcher who is a national of a developing country, who holds a PhD and who has good research experience. The research unit must operate within a university or a research institution in one of the 80 S&TLCs and consist of a core number of research scientists, postgraduate students and technicians. There is no age limit for unit leaders.
Individual scientists and research unit leaders who submit a satisfactory final report on a previous grant may apply for a renewal.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (DNA from Ancient Soils), @ The University of Waikato, New Zealand at the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences - Subject: chemistry/mineralogy/microbiology

Description:. This project “DNA from ancient soils” has been funded by the NZ Marsden Fund for three years.Applications are sought from candidates experienced in molecular biology and aDNA analysis, with a strong background in computational and infomatics skills. Some experience in soil chemistry/mineralogy/microbiology would be an advantage. The work will be performed in both New Zealand (University of Waikato) and Australia (University of Adelaide).
The successful applicant will have been awarded their PhD at the time of taking up the appointment, and will have successfully published papers from their doctoral research.

PhD fellowship Program in Chemistry in Development and Application of novel Proteomics methods Project @ Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO)


Description: The Flemish institute for technological research. CFP incorporates academic research based on mass spectrometry and related techniques, as well as applications in a wide range of areas including structural biology, post translational modifications, quantitative proteomics, biomarker research, metabolomics, and data handling which address questions in human and plant biology.
  • You will be in charge of developing and applying novel proteomics approaches based on ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) and electron transfer dissociation (ETD) on two state-of-the-art platforms, a Waters Synapt G2 with ETD and a Thermo Orbitrap Velos with FAIMS and ETD.
  • You will characterise and compare the performance of these techniques in electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry, using test proteins and other samples and including charge-shifting reagents.
  • The emphasis of your research will be on three aspects in particular:
  • Top-down’ approaches with undigested molecules, e.g. intact proteins or other biomolecules (glycans, lipids) and their complexes;
  • Assessing the performance of IMS and ETD as a separation and classification approach in high-throughput methods;
  • The characterisation of glycosylated proteins, i.e. glycopeptides and glycan structures.
  • You will have an interest in developing new methods for data analysis, specifically for ETD fragmentation spectra, and for the interpretation of ion mobility using modelling approaches.
  • You will closely interact and collaborate internationally with other scientists, particularly biologists, and with the instrument manufacturers.
  • You will explore how novel proteomics approaches can contribute to our understanding of biomolecular structure, assembly and function.
Requirements:
  • You have a masters or an equivalent degree in a scientific subject (e.g. chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics), or in engineering.
  • This project would be particularly well suited for a physical chemist looking to work on novel biological applications, or a biochemist seeking to train in modern analytical techniques.
  • Ideally you will have prior experience with mass spectrometry and/or proteomics, or other (bio-) physical methods.
  • You have experience, or are willing to learn, basic sample preparation and handling techniques. A background in biochemistry is a bonus.
  • You are skilled in using scientific equipment, and you have the ability to use the complex software underlying the processing of mass spectrometry data. Experience with modelling molecular structures is an asset.
  • Additional training or background in the design or modification of complex scientific equipment is a bonus.
  • You have excellent communication and writing skills in English; you can swiftly integrate in international laboratories and can clearly communicate scientific results to co-workers and other scientists from different disciplines.

The aim of this project is to develop an understanding of DHHC protein regulation by screening for novel interacting proteins.
