Description: We are currently inviting applications for PhD fellowships to start summer/autumn 2011.

We seek highly motivated students who can tackle scientific problems in modern plant biology. Doctoral projects will focus on systems-oriented approaches using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Our research combines molecular phenotyping (‘omics’) technologies and cutting-edge analytical techniques with bioinformatics and modelling.

We offer excellent research facilities, interdisciplinary scientific training, and a comprehensive complementary training programme. Our working language is English.

Students holding or about to obtain a Master’s or equivalent degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, informatics, mathematics, or related fields are encouraged to apply.

PhD Scholarship@ Denmark Technical University, Denmark in Rational Evolution of Enzymes

Description: This new, international research project involves the study of the copper-containing enzymes known as laccases: Why did they evolve to their particular current structures, and how are these structures evolutionary optimized for stability and function under extreme environmental conditions, in particular high temperature?

The research area of computational protein evolution is of growing importance, because of the need to process increasingly complex information in the search for new industrial enzymes, both within academic research and within the private sector.

Requirements: Candidates must have-* a master’s degree in engineering or science or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree. Both theoretical and experimental skills need to be proven. Relevant theoretical skills: Computational biology/chemistry, mathematical modeling, biophysics, quantum chemistry, computers/programming. Relevant experimental skills: General Lab experience, protein chemistry, protein expression, mutagenesis, and/or screening.

PhD Scholarship@ The University of Sydney, Australia in Coral Reef Sedimentology and Stratigraphy- Subject: Sciences and Engineering

Description: This scholarship is funded by an ARC Discovery Project grant and will provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project leading to a PhD. The objective of the research project is to investigate the biologic and geologic response of the Great Barrier Reef to sea level and climate changes over the last 30 ka by generating and linking new observational data with numerical modelling. The project will investigate a unique suite of sediment cores and other data collected on the recent Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition (325) http://www.eso.ecord.org/expeditions/325/325.php and the site survey cruise (http://www.marine.csiro.au/nationalfacility/voyagedocs/2007/summarySS07-2007.pdf).

Requirements:Candidates should have : * an Honours 1 or 2A degree (or equivalent) in earth and/or environmental science. Experience/background in carbonate sedimentology, coral reef biology and geology and/or numerical modelling of earth systems would be an advantage.

Stipend:  $26,669 in 2010 (tax exempt).

Description: The Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis invites applications from all disciplines for post-doctoral resident fellowships to be held during the academic year of 2011-2012 from individuals working on topics related to Narratives of Power.

Inspired by the election of Barack Obama, this two-year seminar invites a broad historical meditation on the significance of historically marginal and disfranchised groups moving from the periphery to the center of social, political and cultural institutions. This topical theme creates an opportunity for an expansive, interdisciplinary dialogue about intersection, overlap, and conflict across different channels of power and identity, including race, gender, sexuality and class. We welcome scholars from all disciplines, global regions, and time periods for a wide-ranging exploration of themes of identity, narration and power.
