Postdoctoral Fellowship for project MANTLE RHEOLOGY@ PIMM (Process and Engineering in Mechanics and Materials),France- Subject: micro mechanical modeling

Description: The post-doc will be involved in the micromechanical modeling at the polycrystal scale. The aim is to integrate into the polycrystal model slip-system resistances inferred from experimental data, ab initio calculations, and Dislocation Dynamics (DDD). The used polycrystal model will be based on mean-field homogenization methods (self-consistent scheme associated with the “Second-Order” linearization procedure of Ponte Castañeda), although numerical computations from full-field methods could be also performed if necessary. Micromechanical modeling of such material is a challenging task since all mineral phases comprising the upper mantle exhibit an extreme viscoplastic anisotropy at the grain scale, with three or less known independent slip systems.
Deadline: January 2011

Fellowship @ World Press Institute, USA -Subject: Any subject

Description: The WPI fellowship is offered to 10 journalists from countries around the world. The 2011 program will begin in mid August and end in mid-October. The fellows will spend a month in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, and then travel to several U.S. cities, including New York and Washington, D.C., for briefings, interviews and visits. They will returned to Minnesota for the final week of the program. See the 2010 Schedule for information on the 2010 fellowship and example of WPI events.
Eligibility:At least five (5) years full-time employment in print, broadcast, or online journalism.
Journalists can work for news or editorial departments of newspapers, wire services, radio, television, web sites, online publications or magazines of general public interest.
Photojournalists, editorial cartoonists, columnists and broadcast producers are also eligible.
Those who supervise journalists are eligible providing that they also have at least five years as a working journalist.
Any journalism-related work completed as a university student does not count toward experience. People who work in public relations or at organizations whose primary business is not the media are not eligible.
• Must be currently employed as a non U.S. journalist working outside of the United States.
• Fluency in both written and spoken English.
• Potential for leadership

Postdoc Fellowships(Two) in Automated Damage Localization Systems for Civil Engineering Structures @ Université Libre de Bruxelles(ULB),Belgium- Subject: Mechanical or Civil engineering

Description:. This project deals with the next level of SHM which is damage localization and focuses on the problem of cracking in prestressed concrete. The challenge is to design a data-based damage localization system based on output-only ambient vibrations. The main ingredients of the proposed method are: (i) the use of very large strain sensor networks, (ii) the development of automated and efficient data processing methods based on local spatial filters or several layers of spatio-temporal filters, and (iii) alarm triggering techniques based on unsupervised learning methods. The major innovation in this project is the use of advanced computational techniques for the creation of a large data set of virtual campaigns which are used for the design and optimization of the SHM system. In addition to these virtual campaigns, experimental developments are also foreseen, with a specific emphasis on the evaluation of different techniques for dynamic strain measurements.
Requirements: The candidates should hold a PhD in Mechanical or Civil engineering and should not have been working previously in Belgium. For the first position, experience in numerical modeling preferably in the field of non-linear mechanics or vibrations is necessary. For the second position, experience in experimental vibration testing and instrumentation is required.
Deadline: January 1st 2011
