EPSRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow@ University of Stirling, UK- Cognitive Control of Autonomous Systems- Subject: Science

Description: The Cognitive Signal Image Processing Research (COSIPRA) Laboratory of Dr. Amir Hussain at the University of Stirling invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on the EPSRC project “Dual Process Control Models in the Brain and Machines with Application to Autonomous Vehicle Control”.
Given the inherent similarities between the two problem domains of AVC and action selection in animals, this ambitious project aims to leverage new results from psychology and neurobiology discovered in the laboratory of the project Co-Investigator (Prof Kevin Gurney at The University of Sheffield) and apply them to the AVC controllers under development in Dr Hussain’s Lab at Stirling. The outcome should be a new generation real-time cognitive AVC controller, more directly inspired by the biological ideas. The appointed postdoctoral researcher will work closely with our industrial partners (Industrial Systems Control and SciSys) to evaluate the benefits of these novel controllers within the challenging context of regular road driving and planetary rover vehicles.

Description: The Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis invites applications from all disciplines for post-doctoral resident fellowships to be held during the academic year of 2011-2012 from individuals working on topics related to Narratives of Power. This topical theme creates an opportunity for an expansive, interdisciplinary dialogue about intersection, overlap, and conflict across different channels of power and identity, including race, gender, sexuality and class. We welcome scholars from all disciplines, global regions, and time periods for a wide-ranging exploration of themes of identity, narration and power.
This upcoming year (2011-2012), “Narratives of Power” will focus on issues of culture, everyday life and identity formation. Although we recognize that there can never be a clear separation between realms of political economy and cultural production, the second year will focus more specifically on the inter-subjective of realm of experience and self-expression. Included within these broad parameters is a meditation on the process of identity formation and culture. This includes more traditional ideas of Kultur as understood through artistic expression in aesthetics, music, art, poetry and prose, performance, photography and electronic media, as well as a broader and more inclusive understanding of the social aspects of culture as everyday life and practices. Working in this vein, we invite research on family, community based institutions, religion, education and social reproduction.

They  are looking for motivated and enthusiastic student to embark on basic environmental research in quantitative modeling of primary abiotic processes controlling microbial life in unsaturated soils at various spatial and temporal scales by explicitly considering hydration, heterogeneity, bacterial motion and diffusion of multiple nutrients and their impact on interactions of competing microbiological populations. We are interested in quantifying the combined roles of hydration and multi-source nutrient composition and concentration on multi species bacterial colony dynamics and morphology and on formation and function of cooperative microbial consortia and their spatial configuration in soil pores.
Requirements: Candidates should have : a Master’s degree from an accredited university or an equivalent Diplom in the areas of physics, engineering or environmental sciences (exceptional students without a Masters degree will be considered as well); excellent computer skills; a solid background in biology and mathematics, as well as some background knowledge of soil physics; English language skills (German is of advantage but not required). The successful candidate will closely collaborate with scientists from ETH Zurich, the Soil and Environmental Terrestrial Physics (STEP), and other partners, as well as assistance with teaching and other activities of the lab. The position is available for a period of 3 years and planned to start early in 2011.
