Bachelors Program 2011 @Microsoft University- Subject: Computer science and related technical disciplines



Description: Microsoft College scholarships are designed to encourage students to pursue studies in computer science and related technical disciplines. Students will be awarded scholarships in recognition of their passion for software, academic excellence, and ability to make a difference in the software industry. A large majority of Microsoft University Scholarship will be awarded to female students, under-represented minority students or students with disabilities. Minority applicants must be a member of one of the following groups under-represented in the software field: African American, Hispanic or Native American


Criteria: Students must be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at a 4-year college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico at the time the application is submitted. Students must be enrolled full-time and making satisfactory progress toward an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline, such as math or physics, with a demonstrated interest in computer science. The student must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0, or a 4.0 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 5.0.
Requirement: A completed application includes five items: your résumé, transcript, essay questions, letter of referral, and confirmation of your online application to the Microsoft Summer Internship program. An application is considered ineligible if all parts are not received. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all pieces are received by Microsoft by the deadline.
1. Résumé – Enclose a copy of your résumé that includes your e-mail address, campus address and phone number, student ID number, permanent address and phone number, major and expected graduation date.
2. Transcript – Enclose a copy of your current academic transcript.
3. Essay Questions – Use one page to answer all four of the following essay questions (not one page per question).
• Describe how you demonstrate your passion for technology outside the classroom.
• Describe the toughest technical problem you’ve worked on, how you addressed the problem, your role in reaching the outcome, if it was
team-based, and the final outcome.
• Describe a situation which demonstrates initiative and your willingness to go above and beyond.
• Describe how you are currently funding your college education.
4. Letter of referral – Enclose a letter of referral from a faculty member or an academic advisor who knows your work.
5. Confirmation of Online Application to the Microsoft Internship Program – Apply online at http://www.microsoft.com/university for a summer internship and print out a confirmation page showing you have done so. This printed confirmation must be included in your mailed application materials.
6. Gender/Ethnicity/Disability (optional) – Please note your gender, ethnicity or disability on the page with your essay questions if you would like that information to be considered with your application.

Postdoctoral Two Fellowships: Automated Damage Localization Systems for Civil Engineering Structures: Application to Cracking in Prestressed Concrete, 2 @ Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB),Belgium- Subject: Mechanical or Civil engineering



Description: This project deals with the next level of SHM which is damage localization and focuses on the problem of cracking in prestressed concrete. The goal of vibration based structural health monitoring (SHM) is to replace costly inspection campaigns by real-time instrumentation and automated data processing in order to estimate the current state of health and the remaining lifetime of structures.The challenge is to design a data-based damage localization system based on output-only ambient vibrations.
Elligibility : The candidates should hold a PhD in Mechanical or Civil engineering and should not have been working previously in Belgium. For the first position, experience in numerical modeling preferably in the field of non-linear mechanics or vibrations is necessary. For the second position, experience in experimental vibration testing and instrumentation is required.

(Phd) Research Scientist Position@ International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture, Dubai- Subject:Land Data Assimilation System


Description This research will generate data and scientific insight on regional surface- and ground-water resources.The position is full-time fixed term (initially six months with the possibility of extension) with a competitive international package. The position is based at the ICBA campus in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Requirement: * Expertise in analysing GRACE, and if possible MODIS and TRMM data as well.
* Experience in working with numerical models (hydrology, hydrogeology, SVAT or climate).
* proven ability to handle/analyze spatio-temporal data sets relating to environmental monitoring and models as well as to remote sensing.
* Expertise in scientific programming (ideally FORTRAN, Unix or PERL).
* Experience with ENVI and ArcGIS.

Qualifications:: Masters-degree level education and advanced skills in Remote Sensing, Hydrological Science, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
Collaboration with the other members of the MENA-LDAS team will be essential to the post, offering ample opportunities to broaden the successful applicant’s expertise.

Description: This Fellowship in natural sciences are tenable for a period of up to 3 years at the departments of the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Kenya.

Postgraduate (PHD)Fellowship Programme for Young Scientists from Developing Countries, @TWAS-ICCBS Pakistan- Subject: Chemical and biological sciences


Description: TWAS-ICCBS Postgraduate Fellowships are tenable at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) – comprising the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry and the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular and Drug Research, www.iccs.edu – for a period of up to four years for studies leading to a PhD degree in the following fields: organic chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular medicine, pharmacology or physical chemistry.
Requirements: Applicants may be registered for a PhD degree in their home country (SANDWICH option), or may enrol in a PhD course at ICCBS (FULL-TIME option). In both cases, the programme entails only one journey to the host country.
If awarded, applicants must sit a compulsory entrance examination in either April or October prior to starting their Fellowship. For the entrance examination, candidates can enter Pakistan on a visitor’s visa. Upon successful completion of the entrance examination, candidates will immediately begin their research programme and the necessary requirements for a study visa will be implemented while at the host institution. Local hospitality for candidates travelling to Pakistan for the entrance examination will be provided by ICCBS.

* hold a Master’s degree in a field of natural sciences;

Description: Scholarship recipients may pursue an undergraduate degree in an eligible field at one of the three host institutions. Recipients will also be expected to engage in community service activities and participate in internships. The scholarship covers travel, academic fees for four years of university at AUB, AUC, or LAU, a study abroad experience in the U.S., accident and sickness insurance, housing, and a monthly allowance.
Eligibility:The program is open to high school graduates from traditionally underserved communities in the Middle East and North Africa, who are qualified but unable to afford a college education. Students enroll at the undergraduate level in a 4-year or 5-year program, depending upon the course of study elected and if a first year of English language instruction is required. Description: The group is dedicated to studying the biology of human macrophages in the context of infection. The aims are to understand which innate immune responses of macrophages are induced by different pathogens and to elucidate the evasion mechanisms these pathogens have evolved to counteract these immune responses. The pathogens studied by the group include viruses (HIV, HCMV), bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes) and eukaryotic parasites (Leishmania major). Positions are available immediately and will be filled as soon as suitable candidates are identified. Remuneration will be according to German public service regulation (TV-L).

Qualifications: Candidates should have a degree in biology or a related field and are expected to have a strong interest in molecular biology, infectious diseases and cell culture techniques. Experiences in immunology are a plus. Superior motivation, willingness and good communication skills in English are prerequisites.
Time Period: 2 years. There is a possibility of an employment extension subsequently.Ulm is committed to increase the share of women in research and teaching positions and therefore explicitly encourage female candidates to apply.

Description: TWAS offer one fellowship per year to visiting scholars from developing countries (other than Kenya) who wish to pursue advanced research in natural sciences.TWAS-icipe Visiting Scholar Fellowships in natural sciences are tenable for a minimum period of one month to a maximum period of three months at the departments of the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Kenya.

Eligible: Fellowships are tenable at icipe in the Programmes of Animal Health, Human Health, Plant Health, Environmental Health, in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, in the Department of Behavioural and Chemical Ecology, in the Department of Entomology, and at the field station of Mbita, Lake Victoria, Kenya.
